Introduction: To the West and the World

My blog is about Chapter 25, The West and the World. This chapter basically showed the industrialization and the idea of nationalism travel all the way through Europe. It also shows changes that impact the rest of the world. We saw numerous idea spread during this period. We also saw massive migration which led to expansion in the western part. By the end of the chapter we learned how India, Japan and China were able to meet the imperialist challenge. Building and investment were made in order to modernize the city.

Objective: My objective is to provide you with the key information that hold significant importance with in this chapter.

EQ: How does the idea of the white mans burden impact us today?

Answer: Well the whole idea of the white man burden is that blacks are inferior to whites and that they are dirty and need to become pure. I think that in some instances racism still exist today but it is not as obvious as back then. I mean back then they cleanly stayed with pictures and the pear soap. Now I think blacks are just grouped together and looked at as more of a stereotype than a person.

Two Political Cartoons:

This political cartoon depicts the idea that everyone steps on and or simply walks over Africa. I mean the Africans are looked at as second class citizen. They are treated as if they are unintelligent and as if they are dirty human beings. They were also looked down upon and treated as if they were inferior to whites. When you look at the political cartoon we realize that it is Africa because the outline is the continent Africa. The foot print symbolizes that they are walked on and people think is okay to mark them up emotionally as well as physically. I think it is ironic that Africa is separated from other continents this reflects that they are alone in there fight regardless if they like it or not.

This political cartoon shows all of the political leaders in Europe and Asia. The picture includes Queen Victoria who is giving Ottoman Von Bismark a scolding look. Then they include representative of Russia,France which lady liberty is used and Japan. The man in the back represent China and it seems to me that all of them are trying to get a piece of China. The pie sitting on the table represents the idea that they are dividing China up. The pictures portrays that they are desperate and will do anything to get there hands on a piece of China. I agree with the authors depiction I mean in life people will do anything in order to conqueror and or maintain land.

Do you think the US is/has been imperialistic?

I think that the United States can be perceived as being imperialistic. I mean when you look at the war with Iraq we see some imperialistic tendencies arise. I mean at first our purpose was to fight because they ran a terroristic attack on us. I don't think our purpose was to take over there land, but does it appear like that ? I mean were have been at war for over nine years, what was the true purpose. I mean incident people are dieing each and everyday to protect our country.
Pros:
1.The Third World Countries have most of the factories.
2.Our government is modernizing.
3.We are feared by other countries which shows that we can be courage.
Cons:
1. We look at how efficent our country is rather than trying to conquer and take over other ones.
2. We make it clear that we do not want to become communist we run on capitalism.
3. We act based on one decison rather then what is benefical to our country.

US Imperialism:

When the Federal government took over the business to produce war supplies, companies worried that they would loose their incoming profits. The confidence was that business were confident to mass produce supply and materials for the war. The country question whether they had enough resources and the business or factories producing these resources such as guns, tank ammunition, ship planes gave the message that we were ready. Business gave the country confidence that they had enough essentials to fight the war. The exaggeration is that the hammer is putting a whole in a bomb that is labeled war panic. The United States confidence in their manufacturing business had a great impact on the War. It we don't learn from our mistakes history can and will repeat itself.

Two US Events

THE CIVIL WAR:
Some believe that the social and economic difference led to the Civil War. The Civil War was from 1861-1865. It was considered the most violent war that the United States had ever had. This war was a war between states in other wards brother against brother. Abraham Lincoln was the president during this time. They were fighting mainly over there beliefs and right. In the end the Confederates surrendered. By the end 2.4 million soldiers were killed and many were injured. This war was considered gruesome and the land and territories were destroyed.

THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR:
This was a short conflict between the United States and Spain. The war was declared in April of 1898 and end in August of the same year. after the war they signed the Treaty of Paris which ended the conflict. The war started because the United States wanted Spain to peacefully resolve Cuba's demands for independence. Only July 3, 1898 the Spanish American war became the largest naval battle. Which ended in total destruction for the Spanish.
CONNECTION ACROSS CONTINENT:
The connection across the continent would be regardless of where you are in the world people fight for what they believe is right and will stick by there beliefs and they will rebellion if at all necessary. We see similar reoccurring themes through this chapter. Each country want to gain land through imperialism and they will not stop until they get what they want.

The Great Rebellion:

The 1857 and 1858 insurrection by the Muslims and Hindu mercenaries in the British army spread throughout northern and central India before finally being crushed. This was considered the most important uprising and this event helped lead to new imperialism. The Muslims and Hindus were taught to fight with British weapon so they were used to them. I think that is a smart tactic because are one step ahead of your opponent and you will already know what to expect. When the new guns were issued the British stuffed them with pork and the Muslim were furious because they believe pigs are unclean animals so of course they turned on the British. The war ended in 1858 and the British crushed them and took full control over India

Expect the unexpected !

Current Uprising in the World :

Recently Arab Spring has been in the news. Arab Springs a series of anti government uprising in various countries in North Africa and the Middle East, beginning in Tunisia in December of 2010. But more specfically Libya has recently been in our news for all of there revolts and uprising against the control. Libya leader was Muammar Gaddafi but he was killed on October 20, 2011. The Libyan people protest and riot because they feel the government is being over thrown.
